TRIMARK/LIONS GATE
Story Line: Art student Sam (Donella), stricken with love at first sight for Hope (Bartlett), spends several weeks trying to woo her out of a mysterious depression. His schemes involve many other women, including Annie (Morrison), who starts to fall for Sam herself.
Bottom Line: Originally entitled Girl Fever, this post-teen romantic comedy aspires to be clever and engaging but comes off as a just a bit too overwrought. The idea is intriguing--how did Sam end up surrounded by 100 petulant women at the finale?--but the ruse is never justified. Writer/director Davis, whose 100 Girls (the Video Premiere Award winning best live action movie in 2001) is frighteningly similar, plays it like he's a Farrelly brother (witness the nostril clearing gross-out scene with the shameless Howard), but he's better when focusing on the more romantic aspects of the story. Production values are polished to a shine and the ladies are lovely, which makes it pleasant enough viewing for the light entertainment that it is. --Buzz McClain
