Extremedays
12/17/2001
ADVENTURE Color, PG (profanity), 93 min., PPV 90 days, price Street: Jan. 29, Prebook: Jan. 8 First Run: L, Sept. 2001, <$1 mil. Cast: Dante Basco (But I'm a Cheerleader), Ryan Browning, A.J. Buckley (The Forsaken), Derek Hamilton (Disturbing Behavior), Cassidy Rae (Evolver) Director: Eric Hannah SPARTAN
Story Line: Shortly after graduating from college, four friends (Basco, Browning, Buckley, Hamilton) take a road trip across California, stopping along the way to indulge in a variety of "extreme sports." When one of the guys learns of his grandfather's death, the buddies' aimless journey becomes a pilgrimage to pay respects to the old man.
Bottom Line: A transparent attempt to capitalize on the popularity of extreme-sports shows and MTV's late Jackass, the fresh-from-theatrical-release Extremedays offers four jackasses (and one girl!) engaging in sport after sport as they trek northward through California. Their relaxation in between consists of random pranks and bar bets, sentimental interludes where they weepily recall unhappy childhood moments and unselfishly offer food to the homeless and (natch) the pursuit of the nearest available "dream girl," played here by the very Cameron Diaz-like Rae. The fast-moving footage of surfing, skateboarding, dirt bike racing and snowboarding, though ultimately brief, could still make this a strong rental prospect for fans of the countless cable airings of extreme competitions, particularly the skateboarding contests led by the patron saint of the sport, Tony Hawk. --Ed Grant
