Immortality
2/12/2001
THRILLER Color, R (mature themes, violence, sexual situations, language), 99 min., PPV 90 days, VHS rental price, DVD $32.99 Street: March 13, Prebook: Feb. 20 Cast: Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Elina Lowensohn (Six Ways to Sunday), Timothy Spall (Topsy Turvy), Jack Davenport Director: Po-Chih Leong MIRAMAX/BUENA VISTA
Story Line: Handsome, wealthy and educated Steven Grlscz (Law) would seem to be the perfect suitor, but he has a disturbing secret: He's a vampire-like serial killer who slays his girlfriends only after they have fallen in love with him. He believes he's met his latest match with beautiful engineer Anna (Lowensohn), which could spell her doom.
Bottom Line: Leong creates and sustains a singularly eerie tone in this nontraditional vampire saga (Grlscz needs blood to survive a rare disease) that recalls Michael Powell's Peeping Tom and, more recently, Abel Ferrara's The Addiction. Law's tortured, ultra-glib modern-day vampire is a refreshing contrast to the typical portrayal of bloodsuckers, and lady love Lowensohn's reaction to his condition is equally unexpected. Released on a limited theatrical platform last spring, the bit-too-talky Immortality has plenty of quiet chills and horrific thrills along with some graphic vein-opening action. With its British cast and lack of theatrical advertising, this will need a push to find its audience. --Buzz McClain
