Nintendo gives few Wii details

E3 UPDATE: Console will arrive in Q4, but no price announced

MAY 9 | LOS ANGELES--Nintendo stayed mum on further details about its new console at the Electronic Entertainment Expo here Tuesday, except to say that consumers will be having fun and paying less with the Wii.

Nintendo announced the name of the new videogame console a few weeks ago, but details about when it will launch and at what price are still missing. Nintendo did say the Wii would be in stores in the fourth quarter.

With Nintendo’s upcoming Wii--a more powerful extension of the existing GameCube architecture—costing much less to manufacture than either Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Microsoft’s Xbox 360, the expectation was that Nintendo would affix a $200 MSRP on the system for this week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The company also revealed that the Wii will debut with the latest title in the long-running Legend of Zelda franchise, Twilight Princess.

Nintendo presented 27 playable games for the system, a robust number suggesting the Wii could be launched sooner than later.

But Nintendo of America executive VP of sales and marketing Reginald Fils-Aime only teased, You’ll have more fun for less money, and you’ll be playing in the fourth quarter.

Forced to contend with competitors possessing much greater graphics power, Nintendo pressed the advantages of its innovative Wii controller. Equipped with sensors, the TV remote-like controller captures hand movements in a more intuitive fashion than traditional gamepads. Eschewing the colloquial, seeing is believing axiom, Fils-Aime substituted, playing is believing.
