Online rentailer says service could launch this year

By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 6/16/2006

JUNE 16 | BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. Netflix VP of original programming Eric Besner this week revealed some of the online rental service’s thinking on the movie download business, saying Netflix is planning to introduce a proprietary set-top box with an Internet connection that could download movies overnight.

Speaking at an Independent Film & Television Alliance here, Besner said that the business model is still being worked out but that the download service would likely launch—possibly as early as this year—as part of the subscription fee members pay for conventional DVD rentals.

He said the set-top box is just one of the Internet plans that Netflix is working on.
