Perry scores hat trick for Lionsgate

Three latest DVDs sell 3.6 million units in street week

JULY 7 | Lionsgate’s new Tyler Perry DVD trio has sold 3.6 million units during street week, according to studio estimates.

Counting the latest June 27 releases—theatrical Madea’s Family Reunion and stage shows Madea Goes to Jail and Why Did I Get Married—Lionsgate has released nine DVDs in its Perry franchise. Collectively, the discs have sold more than 11 million units.

By itself, Family Reunion, which earned $63 million at the U.S. box office, sold more than 2 million units its first week on sale.

“Tyler Perry is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon,” Lionsgate president Steve Beeks said. “He has an enormously loyal following, which continues to grow with each new theatrical and DVD release. His way of delivering incredibly strong moral messages through laughter is something that is unique among today’s filmmakers.”
