JULY 20 | Despite being in stores less than three weeks, Nintendo’s lighter, slimmer and more attractive DS Lite handheld was snapped up by consumers in amazing numbers.
The $129.99 unit was launched on June 11 alongside the existing $119 Nintendo DS.
Though retail sales data is not broken out between both DS models, the original unit averaged 143,000 units sold during April and May, but sales of both models rose to 595,000 in June. That’s more than the combined number of Xbox 360s and PlayStation 2s sold.
The DS Lite’s brisk performance in June was mirrored in game sales, with New Super Mario Bros. (released mid-May for the DS) as the No. 1 best-selling game, with 450,000 units sold.April-June videogame hardware units sold*
