Amazon sued for patent infringement
Computer company IBM files two lawsuits against online retailer
OCT. 23 | Computer giant IBM said Monday that it has filed a pair of patent infringement lawsuits against online retailer Amazon.com.
The lawsuits, filed in the Federal District Court in Texas, involve multiple patents that IBM claims cover such critical aspects of Amazon’s business as its customer recommendation engine, its display of advertising on its site and the storing of customer information on a network.
“We filed this case for a very simple reason. IBM’s property is being knowingly and unfairly exploited,” IBM senior VP of technology and intellectual property John E. Kelly III said in a statement.
Amazon officials were not immediately available for comment.
In a news release, IBM said it had sought repeatedly to engage Amazon in discussions about licensing the technology in question but was rebuffed.
“When someone takes our property, without our permission through a license, we have no option but to protect it through every means available to us,” Kelly said.
