Dances With Wolves, Rocky on service, which now has more than 500 movies

By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 4/12/2007

APRIL 12 | MGM has become the fourth studio to offer movie downloads through Apple iTunes. MGM library films including Dances With Wolves and Rocky are available for download on the service, with additional films added in the coming weeks.

The deal does not include new release movies from MGM. Disney, the first studio to offer movies on the service when it launched in September, is the only studio offering new release movies on iTunes. MGM follows Lionsgate and Paramount, which inked deals with iTunes earlier this year to sell movies from their catalogs.

Apple and those studios have been unable to come to an agreement on pricing for new releases. Apple doesn’t want to pay the DVD wholesale prices for new releases that the studios are demanding.

More than 2 million movies have been downloaded through iTunes, the leading movie download site. With the MGM deal, iTunes will have more than 500 movies available for download.

That pales in comparison to the number of films offered by many of its rivals, including Wal-Mart, which offers 3,000 movies and has deals with all the major studios. Even so, iTunes, already a leader in music and TV show downloads, is the overwhelming market leader in movie downloads.
