TIME-LIFE

Street: June 26
Prebook: now
> Not unusual vintage '60s variety TV, bolstered by a stellar roster of guests.

Another seminal turn-of-the-'60s variety show hits DVD with this eight-show, three-disc representation of the Welsh wonder's three-season (1969-71) ABC series. Hardcore fans will note the “missing” guests that are announced, as the episodes included here are syndication-length edits (most clocking in at 30 minutes or less). The beauty of the set, however, is the mélange of guests and entertainment that made the classic variety show such a unique phenomenon. The first episode, for instance, features musical turns by the Moody Blues and Mary Hopkin, a monologue by Richard Pryor and a short interview and sketch with Peter Sellers. Later episodes offer up musical legends performing songs that hadn't even hit vinyl yet (the Who premiere “Pinball Wizard”), and Jones is present for current-day reflections on each episode in the set.

Shelf Talk: At age 66, Jones' reputation is strong with boomers, but his work with younger artists (from The Pretenders to Wyclef Jean) and constant touring have granted him timeless status. The element that makes this set a classic rock must-have is the roster of guests, many of whom duet with Jones, including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Joe Cocker and, in a most interesting mix of voices, Janis Joplin.

TV variety show, color, NR, 300 min., fullscreen; DVD $39.99
Extras: vintage ABC promos, introductions by Jones, archival and new Jones interviews
