New video site to compete against YouTube
By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 6/28/2007
JUNE 28 | MySpace has launched a beta version of MySpaceTV, a video site that will compete directly against YouTube but with a focus on adding original and exclusive videos from content providers.
MySpaceTV will stream videos uploaded by users and also will partner with content owners, the company said Thursday. The site plans to introduce channels and exclusive content from partners that include FOX’s IGN Entertainment (which offers movie downloads), National Geographic, The New York Times, Reuters, Animation Show and The Daily Reel, among others.
MySpaceTV is open to both MySpace members and non-members. The TV site will be integrated into the company’s community platform and serve as the site’s primary video channel.
MySpace has doubled its video traffic since January when it began adding more videos to its site. MySpace already streams online series Prom Queen from Michael Eisner-backed Vuguru, Sony’s Minisode Network and clips from the National Basketball Assn. and National Hockey League, among others.
“This is the tip of the iceberg,” MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe said in a statement announcing the move. “The incredible video growth trajectory we’re seeing is a testament to the unique content and high user engagement in all corners of the MySpace community. In the last year, we’ve added nearly 20 million unique users in the U.S. alone and continue to see incredible growth around the world.”
