> A clever and sexy college rom-com with a poignant featurette.
Here’s a raunch-free romantic comedy—with American Pie producers in the credits, no less—that’s mounted with breezy charm, painted in lively colors and spiked with just enough tension to infuse it with an appropriate amount of coming-of-age angst. It centers on Almost Famous’ Patrick Fugit, who stars as the intellectually pretentious college student Bick, who has written The Book, which explains all of reality while giving orgasms to those who read it. It’s no surprise that it’s stolen, but it is rather shocking that the thief is gorgeous, free-spirited Sarah (The Black Donnellys’ Olivia Wilde).
Shelf Talk: The studio is pushing this title with trade advertising and, curiously, cross promotions with the Dungeons & Dragons community (there are a few fleeting scenes about D&D). Young adult audiences will be familiar with Fugit, The O.C. veteran Wilde and Harold & Kumar’s John Cho. But all that pales next to the knowledge that debuting writer/director Scott Lew made the film as the effects of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) began taking its toll, as depicted in the “Living With Lew” featurette. A portion of the proceeds will benefit ALS charities; the producers, among them American Pie creators Chris and Paul Weitz, are donating all their revenue to ALS charities, with matching amounts donated by Vulcan Productions. It may be uncomfortable, but that angle might get more attention than D&D.
