> Low-key romantic comedy will reel in indie fans with its star turn by Parker Posey.
In this feature debut by Zoe Cassavettes, daughter of John Cassavettes and Gena Rowlands, Parker Posey is Nora Wilder, a guest relations expert at a trendy Manhattan hotel. In her mid-30s, the lonely Wilder has a series of misadventures with men and the future seems dim, until she meets charismatic young Frenchman Julien (Melvil Poupaud), to whom she takes a liking. After Julien heads back to his home country, Nora and married best friend Audrey (Drea de Matteo) try to track him down in Paris. This low-key but surprisingly edgy romance will appeal to hip females and an indie film crowd with its quirky touches and arthouse friendly cast (which includes Justin Theroux, Peter Bogdanovich and Rowlands).
Shelf Talk: Broken English was produced on high-definition video by HDNet Films, the company responsible for One Last Thing…, Bubble and Fay Grim (another Posey-starrer). Thus, the film has close cable, satellite, theatrical and DVD windows, which can certainly help generate buzz for its DVD debut. HDNet, the DirecTV channel with 4 million subscribers, also will be pushing English, and Magnolia has planned TV, print, radio and online publicity. Retailers should recommend this indie to fans of Sex and the City, with both centering on single women in Manhattan.
