AUG. 6 | Toshiba will release its third-generation HD DVD players in September and October with three players under $500.
Toshiba's HD-A30 is the company's third generation HD DVD player, due in October.
The new line includes the entry-level HD-A3, priced at $299, the HD-A30 priced at $399 and the HD-A35 priced at $499. The HD-A30 is set to debut in September, while the other two models are scheduled for release in October, Toshiba said.
“Because of the proven manufacturing efficiencies of the HD DVD format, Toshiba can bring this level of innovation in technology to a new generation of players with cutting-edge functionality at affordable prices,” said Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for Toshiba’s Digital A/V Group.
The latest line of players will include improved 1080p support and a new CE-Link, which will connect the players with other CE devices in new ways. For example, a user with a player and HDTV that both support CE-Link could turn on the TV and player to begin playing a movie with the touch of a button, Toshiba said.
Toshiba’s announcement comes after word leaked out last week about the new models. On Thursday, Amazon briefly began taking pre-orders on the players with an Oct. 1 release date. However, the retailer took the pages down and they are not yet up again.
