FOX
Street: Sept. 18
Prebook: now
> Guns blast and muscles flex in this newly supplemented Schwarzenegger action fest from the ’80s.

An exemplary ’80s-era Arnold Schwarzenegger kill-athon, tailored around its star and following the popular template of the action hero flicks of the time, Commando is re-issued here in a director’s cut that contains five more minutes than was seen in the original theatrical version (which also is on the disc). Director Mark L. Lester’s cut offers such never-before-released violent flourishes as Schwarzenegger taking on the baddies with an ax to the crotch and a circular blade to the jugular. This latest editions also have two making-of pieces that feature Lester and writer Steven E. de Souza and cast members Bill Duke, Vernon Wells and a giddy Rae Dawn Chong, who at one point describes co-star Duke as “gnarly, scary and the blackest man I’ve ever met.” Gov. Schwarzenegger is nowhere to be seen in this edition’s supplements, but don’t count him out for any future appearances as we think one day “he’ll be back.”

Shelf Talk: We’re not really sure why Fox is re-issuing the far-from-classic Commando at this time—it’s not celebrating any kind of landmark anniversary and Schwarzenegger hasn’t appeared in a new film in years. That shouldn’t hinder some sales, though; Commando is a solid catalog piece, and the bonus materials are a lot of fun. The brawny cover features a pumped Schwarzenegger in full commando gear next to sizable vertical title treatment that is sure to capture attention of wandering eyes.

Action thriller, NR/R (mature themes, violence, brief nudity, language), 95 min./90 min., DVD $19.98
Extras: director’s commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes
Director: Mark L. Lester
First Run: W, Oct. 1985, $37.8 mil.
