LIBRARY DVD GUIDE: Sicko and docs against filmmaker on their way

By Samantha Clark and Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 9/27/2007

SEPT. 27 | Weinstein and Genius have chosen election day for the release of Michael Moore’s health care system exposé, Sicko. The documentary will debut on DVD on Nov. 6 (prebook now) priced at $29.95.

The third-highest-grossing documentary of all time, Sicko will come to disc with almost 30 minutes of additional footage, an interview gallery, footage of the Los Angeles premiere and a music video.

Also bowing the same day is Moore detractor Manufacturing Dissent from Liberation Entertainment, and similarly themed Michael Moore Hates America will be released by Allumination Filmworks Oct. 16 (prebook now, $19.98).

Manufacturing Dissent, a documentary about Moore that uses some of Moore’s own methods in taking a critical look at his filmmaking practices, was originally slated for a DVD launch through Liberation’s regular distributor, which is Sicko distributor Genius. But the title will be distributed instead by Starz Home Entertainment to avoid a conflict.

“We think [Manufacturing Dissent] is a balanced look at Michael Moore, but we value our relationship with Genius and didn’t want to jeopardize that,” said Chris Donaldson, Liberation director of marketing. “

In Michael Moore Hates America, filmmaker Michael Wilson makes no secret of his desire to expose Moore as a wealthy hypocrite rather than the bedraggled outsider image he has built. Wilson tries to inveigle the Fahrenheit 911 director into sitting for an interview and records the opinions of such conservative pundits as Dinesh D’Souza and David Horowitz, along with those of documentarian Albert Maysles and entertainer Penn Jillette.

Made in 2004, Michael Moore Hates America played a few film festivals but didn't reached the nation’s multiplexes.
