> A unique inside look behind the scenes of a quartet of Broadway shows.

Those who’ve always wondered what goes on behind the curtains at Broadway’s biggest hits will enjoy this engrossing documentary, which specifically focuses on four daring shows launched during the controversial 2003-04 season: Wicked; Avenue Q; Taboo and Caroline, or Change. Filmmaker Dori Berinstein captures many of the odd little rituals unique to creators and performers who work on the Great White Way. Especially interesting is the footage devoted to Taboo, the already-legendary fiasco that finds Rosie O’Donnell and Boy George at each other’s throats. Kristen Chenoweth, John Lithgow and Alan Cumming are among the popular performers seen here. Behind-the-scenes footage and specially shot interviews are seamlessly edited.

Shelf Talk: Programs of this type are seldom made, and we can’t think of anything currently in the marketplace to which Show Business can be compared—or on which it can be piggybacked for marketing purposes. It took the Grand Jury prize at last year’s Florida Film Festival, the only win logged on the fest circuit. But the film should appeal to upscale consumers who dote on such programming when it appears on PBS, so reaching them is a must for those expecting to see solid returns.
