This Amish family drama is positioned to be the first major faith title of 2008.
A culture clash between the Amish faith and the more modern world is at the center of Saving Sarah Cain, a film based on the 2000 novel The Redemption of Sarah Cain by Beverly Lewis. Cain (Lisa Pepper) is a big-city newspaper journalist in Portland, Ore., who finds out her Amish sister has died. She travels to Pennsylvania for the funeral, only to find that she is the designated guardian for the five children her sister left behind. Sarah sees the opportunity to use the children as a story in her writing career, and they all move back to Portland to try and make it work. Differences ensue, and it becomes clear that the children belong in the Amish country where they were raised.
Shelf Talk: Released under the Fox Faith imprint, Saving Sarah Cain premiered on Lifetime in August (followed by a tiny theatrical release five days later), where it has had good ratings—which will heighten its recognition but could hinder DVD sales. However, a current repromotion of the book as a tie-in with the popularity of Beverly Lewis, who is well-known for her novels about the Amish, could draw an eager audience.
