> Sex as therapy is at the core of this manic comedy.

Most everything about Sex Crazy is over the top. From its central plot involving a mental institution doctor (Jordi Vilches), who treats his patients by giving them a day at a house of ill repute, to its collection of madcap characters, the film has “wacky” written all over it. Though wackiness should certainly be the point of a movie like this, Sex Crazy hurls its lunacy at viewers from all sides, which gets to be a little exhausting after a while. Director Javier Rebollo owes a great debt to Pedro Almodovar, a filmmaker who has dealt with the same themes of sex and psychology in a much more artful, comic and relatively subtle way. Sex Crazy feels like it is desperately trying to recapture the feelings of Almodovar’s early work, but it is unable to be completely effective on its own terms.

Shelf Talk: This Spanish farce should appeal to fans of Almodovar’s earlier comedies, including Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!. And the sexy box art of star Inma del Moral in a pink wig also should pique interest. However, viewers should know that the actual amount of sex in Sex Crazy is minimal.
