> Farrelly Brothers’ uninspired remake doesn’t play any better in high-def.
The Farrelly Brothers’ poorly conceived remake of director Elaine May’s 1972 black comedy removes the East Coast-style and ethnic flair of the original and replaces them with over-the-top physicality and vulgar silliness. This time around, an anxious newlywed (Ben Stiller, who’s a decade too old for his part) plots to abandon his high-energy, idiosyncratic blonde bride (Malin Akerman) on their honeymoon in favor of a homey, athletic brunette (Michelle Monaghan). Though overlong and foolish, much of the film is set in picture-perfect Cabo San Lucas, a backdrop that certainly lends itself to HD DVD visual quality (as does Akerman). But there’s nary a single HD DVD-exclusive supplement to be had on the disc, which could use a lot more in the way of extras to justify its $39.95 price point.
Shelf Talk: DreamWorks/Paramount would have done better to dip into their library for a solid catalog title rather than issue this one in a high-def format. Of course, Stiller is a seller, and as far as high-def goes, he did gangbusters when Night at the Museum was released in the Blu-ray format. But outside of Stiller lovers and HD DVD new release junkies who must have it all, The Heartbreak Kid ain’t gonna break any records, kid.
