FEB. 11 | Landmark Theatres visitors will be able to exclusively purchase Criterion Collection’s The Last Emperor for one week prior to its wide retail bow on Feb. 26. (Click for our review.)
Criterion will street its title to retail on Feb. 26.
Streeting at the exhibitor’s 58 locations on Feb. 19, Landmark is pricing the title for $49.99.
This marks the first time the Landmark chain has offered an exclusive sales window on a DVD. Landmark does regularly sell titles at its concessions area, focusing on art-house content to match what it tends to carry theatrically.
Criterion’s The Last Emperor spans four-discs and includes commentary by director Bernardo Bertolucci, producer Jeremy Thomas, screenwriter Mark Peploe and composer-actor Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Winner of nine Academy Awards, including best picture, the 1987 film has been out of print on DVD for several years. It was previously available in a single-disc version.
Image Entertainment distributes the Criterion Collection label.
Landmark’s The Last Emperor ‘get’ is the latest example of the exhibitor aggressively growing its business. Last year proved a record year of expansion, as Landmark opened three new theatres including its new luxury flagship outpost in Los Angeles in June.
Currently, Landmark Theatres span 24 different markets.
