> Animation is spot-on in this deluxe edition of the Disney classic.
The memory of the two live-action 101 Dalmatians farces is blotted out when one dips into this pitch-perfect 1961 Disney classic. This two-disc Platinum Edition includes separate sets of supplements geared for kids and adults. The kids’ extras include such games as “Virtual Dalmatian” and “Puppy Profiler,” while the adult supplements offer historical context and detailed information about the film. Also included is a discussion of how the film became a “crossroads” production for the Walt Disney Studios, as its creation eschewed ink and paint reproduction in favor of a Xerox process that cut costs. As with previous collector’s editions of Disney films, the animators are the real stars of the featurettes, and here, both scripter/storyboard man Bill Peet and animator Marc Davis are saluted at length (the latter designed the unforgettable villainess Cruella De Vil).
Shelf Talk: Kids are already familiar with the spotted-pooch story line from previous releases of the cartoon and the live-action movies, so this set is one to stock deep. Animation buffs who are dedicated to Disney’s outstanding Platinum packages also will be entranced—who better to enjoy the heartfelt tribute to master animator Ub Iwerks in the supplements?
