> Heavily merchandised Ben 10 is positioned to capture boys’ imaginations—and their parents’ disposable income.

When this live-action spin-off of Cartoon Network’s popular animated series Ben 10—which finds 10-year-old Ben (Graham Phillips) saving the world from the evil alien Eon—aired in November, some 4 million viewers tuned in, and few were disappointed. Although edited at a TV movie pace, Race Against Time is visually varied and inventive enough to successfully capture the imagination of the target 6- to 11-year-old boy demographic. It also helps that Ben has a cool watch that morphs him into a number of CG-rendered aliens of various sizes and skills. And for the grown-ups, there’s a very game Lee Majors as the grandfather who lends a hand. Yes, it’s goofy at times, but so are boys. The disc also includes a stunt featurette that kids will enjoy, as well as an interview by the cast of director Alex Winter (yes, Bill from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its sequel and TV series).

Shelf Talk: As the Cartoon Network’s most-watched telecast ever, the network’s first-ever live-action program stands to become a tentpole. A toy line, bedding, multi-platform interactive games (by D3 Publishers of America) and books are already in the pipeline. Toys (from Bandai, who does the Power Rangers line) and sporting goods (from major leaguer Franklin Sports) also are scheduled for release around the DVD.

TV animation, color, NR (cartoon violence), 67 min., DVD $14.97
Extras: cast interviews, deleted scenes, behind-the-scene footage, featurettes
Director: Alex Winter
First Run: Cartoon Network, Nov. 2007
