The 4th Dimension is a strange, stylized indie about a loner (Louis Morabito) who becomes obsessed with ideas about dreams and time and the theory that sleep may be the doorway to another dimension. Writers/directors Tom Mattera and Dave Mazzoni’s carefully planned camera set-ups, audio design and narrative pace are designed for maximum creepiness and mood a la David Lynch’s Eraserhead or Roman Polansky’s Repulsion. Dimension’s journey through one man’s subconscious isn’t entirely satisfying at the end, but it’s still engaging and original.
Shelf Talk: Having garnered a substantial buzz over the past couple of years playing at various international film festivals, including such apropos gatherings as Canada’s Rendezvous With Madness Film Festival and the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival, The 4th Dimension arrives on DVD to “brighten” up the midnight movie shelf. It might be worthy picking up more than one copy of the well-priced title as good word-of-mouth might spread its appeal to a substantial number of cult film enthusiasts who are always eager for something new and weird.
