MAY 19 | INDIE FILM GUIDE: Cinequest is hoping current events will boost interest in its June and July titles.
First up is June 17 release Boxers + Ballerinas (prebook May 21; DVD $24.99), a documentary about four young Cubans—a boxer and a ballerina living in Havana and a boxer and a ballerina living in Miami as they pursue similar dreams in different locales. The film may benefit from renewed interest in Cuba since Fidel Castro stepped down as president in February, Cinequest execs said.
A less serious tie-in may stimulate demand for the company’s family film The Mighty Celt. It is due July 15 (prebook June 18; DVD $24.99), just 10 days before star Gillian Anderson reprises the role she is best known for, Agent Dana Scully, in theatrical release The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
Cinequest runs its own film festival each year, and though the titles it distributes on DVD are not necessarily from its festival, “We consider our collection festival favorites,” says a spokeswoman. The Mighty Celt, for example, won an Irish Film & Television Award. Boxers + Ballerinas won a Cinequest award in 2005 and a Breckenridge Festival of Film award.
