Stump the Band

By C.S. O’Brien -- Video Business, 5/19/2008

TLA
Street: June 3
Prebook: now
> Girls + rock + slashers = Drive-in horror thrills

Starring largely unknown actors and even featuring its co-director in a major supporting role, Stump the Band is the sort of DIY indie slasher film that might have been a drive-in hit in a bygone era. It concerns an ambitious all-girl punk band on the road when they run into serious problems when their van breaks down in the backwoods and their anticipated rabid fans turn out to be a pack of bloodthirsty psychos. Appropriately bloody, lewd and vulgar, it also boasts (unlike most similarly budgeted affairs) decent and notably outrageous original songs, which are delivered with gusto by real-life musician Dominique Davalos, daughter of actor Richard Davalos of East of Eden fame.

Shelf Talk: A good-humored, yet pervy horror entry that already has positive word-of-mouth among genre followers, Stump the Band should appeal to interested newcomers, who can safely judge this DVD by its girl band and bloody machette cover.

Horror, color, NR (mature themes, language, graphic violence, nudity), 88 min., DVD $19.99
Extras: director’s commentary, deleted scenes, bonus footage
Director: William Holmes, JoJo Henrickson
First Run: L, March 2006, NA
