Discovering reading Treasures

With the Scholastic Storybook Treasures series, DVD encourages kids to enjoy reading. The next video picture-book release in the series, created by Weston Woods Studios, will arrive in August. Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are will bow as a special edition, revamped from the original video version to include a read-along function and packaged with stickers of the main characters. The title is being released well in advance of the feature film version of the book, expected next year. --Cindy Spielvogel

Scholastic/New Video

Scholastic Storybook Treasures: Where the Wild Things Are Special Edition When Max is sent to bed without supper, he sails off to a world inhabited by weird creatures. Street Aug. 26, prebook July 29; DVD $14.95

Porchlight gets animated

Porchlight Home Entertainment continues to bring animated children’s series to light on DVD. Coming for preschoolers in July is 64 Zoo Lane, an animated series shown on Noggin and based on the books of the same name. It will be joined in August by Adventures From the Book of Virtues, the animated series shown on PBS based on The Children’s Book of Virtues anthology from William Bennett, which teaches moral virtues to kids based on stories such as “William Tell” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” —C.S.

Porchlight

64 Zoo Lane Lucy is a little girl who lives next door to a zoo in this animated series. Street July 29, prebook June 25; DVD $14.98

Adventures From the Book of Virtues: Adventures in Courage and Adventures in Honesty These programs tell stories from the perspective of two kids who deal with the pressures and situations that other kids also face. Both street Aug. 12, prebook July 9; DVD $12.98 each

Lionsgate distributes the Hits

Beginning in May, Lionsgate took over distribution of Hit Entertainment’s DVDs from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Hit franchises include Barney, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam and Thomas & Friends, with future franchises to include Shaun the Sheep. Later this summer, Lionsgate will release another Bob the Builder title, called Houses and Playgrounds, along with the first feature-length Thomas & Friends title in three years, The Great Discovery. —C.S.

Bakugan bowls over boys

Cartoon Network’s new anime series Bakugan: Battle Brawlers will make its DVD debut this summer. Targeting boys ages 6-11, the series premiered on the network in February at No. 1 in its time slot. The DVD is one of a variety of consumer products for the brand, which will reach stores in time for the holiday season. —C.S.
