When I Find the Ocean

By Buzz McClain -- Video Business, 7/7/2008

Street: Aug. 5
Prebook: July 8
Family drama with appeal to grandparents and grandkids.

Get upcoming titles for faith and family

This family drama has the look, feel and casting of a Wonderful World of Disney movie from the ’60s. From the two-dimensional staging to the fake Alabama accents to the swelling violins at the end of every scene, When I Find the Ocean is a woozy celebration of old-school TV cinema (whether intentional or not). Lily Matland Holly plays Lily, a young girl in ’60s Alabama who, like Huckleberry Finn, escapes an abusive stepfather (Richard Tyson) for a river journey to the ocean, where she will complete the grieving process for her missing father, a sailor. But things go awry when she implicates an African-American ship captain (Bernie Casey) in kidnapping on the eve of a civil rights march in Selma, where they happen to be in port and redneck hillbillies await—and Lily is disguised in blackface.

Shelf Talk: There’s room on the shelf for family fare that skews to both an older demographic with fond memories of Diane Ladd, Lee Majors, George Lindsey and Graham Greene (all of whom can be seen here), and to children who can identify with the adventures of a girl and her dog and bunny. As such, Monterey is targeting marketing efforts at Bella Online: The Voice of Women, Today’s Christian Woman and Lime (a lifestyle Web site with a VOD portal). In addition to picking up awards at several regional film festivals, When I Find the Ocean received a Kids First endorsement and the Dove Seal of Approval. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Wildlife Alliance. Ocean also is slated to open theatrically in select markets this summer, which will raise awareness in those areas.
