Never Back Down: Extended Beat Down Edition Blu-ray

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 7/28/2008

SUMMIT
Street: July 29
Prebook: now
> Blistering punches and kicks fuel the Blu-ray action.

Although the teen underdog story line is nothing original, cribbing from Fight Club, Rocky and TV’s One Tree Hill, Never Back Down has enough visual power—in the way of ripped muscles, bikinied girls and frenzied mixed martial arts fighting—to make it entertaining. Blood spews as the new guy in town (Sean Faris) fights or learns how to fight his high school arch nemesis (Cam Gigandet), and fought-over love interest Amber Heard’s blond locks and exposed skin are heightened in high-def.

Shelf Talk: Mixed martial arts is hot these day (look at the popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship), and centering it within the world of beautiful teens ups the ante on the genre. The Blu-ray version might have difficulty reaching its target demographic, cash-strapped youths, especially as the standard DVD, priced a couple dollars less, offers both the unrated and theatrical versions of the movie (Blu-ray has only unrated) and more featurettes.

Action drama, color, NR, 113 mins, BD $34.99, reviewed on Sony BDP S300 on Samsung 37-inch HDTV with HDMI connection
Extras: commentary, deleted scenes, two featurettes, alternate angle fight mode
Director: Jeff Wadlow
First Run: W, March 2008, $25.8 mil.
