OPINION: Rental turnover

AUG. 1 | IN REPRISE of its performance in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the video rental business seems to be weathering a gloomy economy better than other industry segments. According to Rentrak data reported in a front-page story in this week’s Video Business, rental revenue was up 0.5% nationally through the first half of the year.

The Video Buyers Group reports that business is up about 6% among its 1,800 indie retail members.

That may not sound like much, but it’s a heck of a lot better than the U.S. auto industry is doing, to cite just one depressing example.

It also compares favorably with other entertainment sectors, such as cable operators, who have seen the pool of new subscribers dry up as a result of the housing crisis.
