SEPT. 26 | Warner Home Video confirmed it will release this year’s No. 1 theatrical hit, Batman tale The Dark Knight, on DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 9, as expected.
Retailers have long expected the $500 million-plus theatrical hit (prebook Oct. 28) to drop on that date, and other studios have steered clear, with the exception of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, which will release Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! on the same day.
Ron Sanders, president of Warner, told VB recently that Dark Knight alone will help push the box office of Warner’s fourth-quarter DVD slate up 30% over last year. The studio has one of the strongest fourth-quarter slates, including Sex and the City: The Movie, which came out this week; Get Smart, due Nov. 4; and Journey to the Center of the Earth on Oct. 28.
Dark Knight will street on single-disc for $28.98, two-disc for $34.99 and Blu-ray for $35.99.
Bonus features on the two-disc include a “Gotham Uncovered” making-of featurette, six Imax scenes, six episodes of fictional Gotham Cable news program Gotham Tonight, poster art and production stills and a digital copy. Blu-ray adds featurettes “Batman Tech” and “Batman Unmasked” and BD Live.
The record-breaking film, which stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne and Batman, also was well publicized as Heath Ledger’s last role before his untimely death. Ledger’s turn as Joker has been rumored to be Oscar-worthy.
