April 14

Exosquad: Season 1 UNIVERSAL prebook 2-24; DVD $19.98 Sci-fi: All 13 episodes of the animated series about the interplanetary war between humanity and Neosapians.

 

Virgil Films strikes DVD Gold

Virgil Films and Entertainment (formerly Arts Alliance America) has made a deal with Fabulous Films of the U.K. to release programming including The Mysterious Cities of Gold, an animated series that ran on Nickelodeon and NBC in the ’80s. Virgil president Joe Amodei says the deal came about at the suggestion of TVShowsOnDVD.com, which states on its site that the series “has been passionately wanted on DVD by the devout fans who grew up watching the series on Nickelodeon and want to share it with their own kids.” The series crosses over to the anime world in addition to the family market and will be promoted to both, Amodei says. Future releases from the deal with Fabulous will include the series The Monster Squad and The Red Hand Gang. The series will be released as complete sets, both in standard versions and as deluxe sets including a wealth of collectible material. —Cindy Spielvogel

The Mysterious Cities of Gold VIRGIL FILMS prebook 3-10; DVD $49.95 Animated: This children’s series follows a group of Spaniards who set out to find the Seven Cities of Gold. The deluxe edition ($79.95) has a collector’s booklet, historical facts booklet, postcards and a poster.

Feet walks to home video

Peace Arch Home Entertainment is launching the PBS Kids series Franny’s Feet on DVD. The award-winning animated series is about a girl who travels to a different part of the world every time she tries on a different pair of shoes in her grandfather’s repair shop. The series teaches preschoolers about global awareness, science and vocabulary. The debut release will have special features including an activity sheet. —C.S.

Franny’s Feet: Princess Franny PEACE ARCH prebook now; DVD $14.99 Children’s: The animated PBS Kids preschool series makes its DVD debut with a six-episode disc.

Velveteen Rabbit hops to disc

Anchor Bay Entertainment will release a new version of The Velveteen Rabbit in time for Easter. Directed by Michael Landon Jr., son of the late actor from Little House on the Prairie and Bonanza, the film comes to DVD three weeks after its theatrical debut this month. —C.S.

The Velveteen Rabbit ANCHOR BAY/STARZ prebook 2-13; DVD $24.97 Family: Jane Seymour, Tom Skerritt and Ellen Burstyn voice this live-action/animation movie based on the classic children’s story.

Bolt Blu-ray breaks Tuesday street

Like other major titles that have been released on a day other than the usual Tuesday street date, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Bolt is being released on a Sunday. But in an extra twist, the Sunday release will consist of a two-disc Blu-ray version packaged with a standard single-DVD and digital copy. Two days later, a two-DVD special edition with digital copy will be available. Disney is heavily promoting the Blu-ray version, which will include exclusive bonus features such as BD Live. Bolt is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. —C.S.

Bolt DISNEY prebook now; DVD $29.99, two-DVD $32.99 (available March 24), BD with DVD and digital copy $39.99 Family: The new CGI Disney film, rated PG, grossed $112.8 million at the box office and comes with the new short “Super Rhino.”

Spider-Man swings for Sony

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has a variety of support for the release of the next two volumes in the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. On TV, the series is being relaunched on Disney XD. The series previously aired on the CW, where it had more than 1.8 million weekly viewers. There also will be a new wave of toys from Hasbro and a fast food tie-in, as well as online and in-theater ads. Both volumes feature a “Play All Episodes” function for seamless viewing. The latest animated incarnation of Stan Lee’s Spider-Man franchise is designed to be hip and exciting, with characters voiced by Josh Keaton (Cartoon Network’s Ben 10), Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls) and Josh LeBar (HBO’s Entourage). —C.S.
