Acorn, BBC introduce new labels

“Two years ago, I wouldn’t be leading a release slate with a natural history title,” says Burton Cromer, executive VP of consumer products for BBC Worldwide Americas. But with consumers’ increasing interest in the planet as well as the availability of higher-quality viewing options, times have changed. BBC Video is about to release Nature’s Most Amazing Events, the first title under its new BBC Earth brand. The program comes from the renowned BBC Natural History Unit and is “the best thing the unit has done since Planet Earth,” Cromer says.

Also, Acorn Media’s new Athena label makes its debut June 2 with a slate that includes three U.K. titles: The Adventure of English, Every Picture Tells a Story and Playing Shakespeare. The new label was created to offer documentaries geared toward lifelong learning. The titles are getting a good reception from retailers, says Mark Stevens, president of Acorn U.S. “Everybody’s looking for something a little different,” he says. —Cindy Spielvogel
