> Well-crafted contemporary tale about longing and love.
In director James Gray's (We Own the Night, Little Odessa) latest film about life, love and family in the boroughs of New York, a troubled young man (Joaquin Phoenix) in Brighton Beach finds himself in love with two very different women: his new neighbor, a lively but mysterious party girl (Gwyneth Paltrow) and the staid and caring daughter (Vinessa Shaw) of a family business associate. Sincere, emotional and well-paced, Two Lovers is right on target as it examines the motivations and feelings of young people who realize they're not going to be young forever.
Shelf Talk: Phoenix has claimed that he's retiring from acting, so the possibility that Two Lovers could be his final film might appeal to audiences, though Paltrow's star power and Gray's growing following should not be ignored.
