Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary - DVD Review

By Ed Grant -- Video Business, 10/19/2009

FIRST RUN
Street: Oct. 20
Prebook: now
> Herzog, Maysles and others talk about non-fiction filmmaking.

Thirty-three documentarians offer reflections on making non-fiction films in this informative Canadian primer on the genre. The “superstars” involved are cinema verité master Albert Maysles and Werner Herzog, but filmmaker Pepita Ferrari gets a good cross-section of filmmakers, including Errol Morris and Patricio Guzman. The issues confronted are such important ones as finding a topic, the effect the camera has on subjects and restaging sequences for one’s film.

Shelf Talk: Capturing Reality will do well with film-school audiences and fans of documentaries. This one belongs in any well-stocked non-fiction film collection.

Documentary, color/B&W, NR (some language), 97 min., DVD $29.95, UPC: 720229913966
Extras: four hour of additional filmmaker interviews
Director: Pepita Ferrari
First Run: DVD premiere
