Sony to release DVDs to Vietnam

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 5/2/2008

MAY 2 | Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will become the first major U.S. studio to release DVDs to the Vietnam market through its partnership with Galaxy Studio.

Starting on May 9, the aligned companies will start releasing to Vietnam a selection of 15 titles, including Casino Royale, Surf’s Up and its three Spider-Man films. In the future, Sony hopes to release five to 10 of its films to the country per month and eventually launch Blu-ray Disc titles there as well.

“This deal underscores SPHE’s commitment to growing our business around the globe and represents the industry’s first major step in developing this untapped market,” said T. Paul Miller, SPHE’s senior VP of international. “We are thrilled to have found in Galaxy a partner who understands our library and is dedicated to delivering the best quality content to discerning consumers in their market.”

Galaxy president Tran Vu Hoai added, “As a leading company in the entertainment business in Vietnam, Galaxy is very pleased to partner with SPHE to distribute the studio’s content to local consumers in Vietnam. We strongly believe that such a partnership will bring great benefits to Vietnam’s growing home entertainment market as well as to our two companies.”
