> Sci-fi actioner will score at home thanks to hot stars and memorably tricky premise.

If Next feels like Déjà Vu all over again, it’s because the premise is awfully darn close to the Denzel Washington thriller issued on DVD earlier this year. Based on a story by Philip K. Dick (Minority Report, Blade Runner), Next stars Nicolas Cage as Vegas magician Cris Johnson, a trickster who has the unique ability to see two minutes into the future. Because of that ability, Johnson is targeted by FBI agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) to help her thwart a plot hatched by a German terrorist (Thomas Kretschmann) to blow up Southern California. But Johnson wants nothing to do with the feds, especially after he meets dream girl Liz (Jessica Biel) in a diner. Surprisingly, director Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day) places the terrorist stuff on the backburner, while the romantic union and Moore’s dogged attempts to find Cage are in the foreground. This makes the film somewhat unique, but the action elements in the latter part of the film and the villain just feel generic in comparison.

Shelf Talk: Following a disappointing turn at the box office, Next is a surefire winner on DVD, particularly as it’s coming out right behind the hot wheels of Cage’s Ghost Rider, which has been riding high on the sales and rental charts for eight weeks now. Meanwhile, ever-hot Biel’s recent presence in several popular theatrical and DVD titles—I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, The Illusionist, Stealth—are proof positive of her following, and sci-fi fans certainly know the late Dick’s track record very well.

Director: Lee Tamahori
First Run: W, April 2007, $17.5 mil.
