Discovery opens branded boutiques in Blockbuster

Titles to be promoted with signage, trailers

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 6/24/2008

JUNE 24 | Discovery Networks is opening branded boutiques inside Blockbuster stores to sell dozens of its DVD titles.

Featured titles, distributed by a range of suppliers including Image Entertainment and Genius Products, will be slotted in 2,500 U.S. Blockbuster locations. The releases will span Discovery's entire family of channels, including Discovery Channel, Discovery Kids, TLC and The Military Channel.

Initial releases will cover such shows as Planet Earth, Meerkat Manor and Man vs. Wild.

Blockbuster promises to promote the content with signage and trailers running on its in-store TV network.

“Our agreement with Blockbuster will be a boon for customers who want greater access to the Discovery networks’ award-winning and popular programs and series,” said Patrick Gates, president and general manager of Discovery Commerce, which includes Discovery’s home video division. “We’re now making all the great content on the Discovery Channel as close as the neighborhood Blockbuster store.”

“Blockbuster is committed to providing the widest possible array of quality entertainment, so we are very excited that we can now offer customers the engaging non-fiction programming found on Discovery’s world-class networks,” said Greg Creel, director of retail film at Blockbuster.
