Studio releases documentary near Academy Award noms

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 11/9/2007

NOV. 9 | New Line is positioning arcade documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters as a contender for a Best Documentary Oscar, streeting the title on Jan. 29, days after the 2007 Academy Award nominations are unveiled on Jan. 22.

The title about two men battling to become the Donkey Kong high scorer might not scream critical cinematic achievement. But New Line believes the ferocious emotion that Kong’s filmmakers capture in their subjects is worthy of honor.

“This isn’t as serious as most documentaries tend to be, but it is as absorbing and intriguing as any suspense movie,” New Line executive VP Matt Lasorsa said. “We did struggle about when would be the optimum time to come out with the DVD. But we decided on Jan. 29, primarily because with a nomination in mid-January, our promotions group could really ramp up over that.”

Lasorsa said New Line has locked in Kong player Steve Wiebe to make appearances and help market the title.
