Toshiba will drop HD DVD
FEB. 19 | Toshiba, officially conceding the format war to rival Sony and its Blu-ray Disc, will discontinue production of its next-generation DVD player and discs and expects to be out of the HD DVD business by next month. Universal Studios, the only studio that has supported HD DVD exclusively since its launch, quickly jumped on the Blu-ray bandwagon.

With Toshiba hoping to be out of the HD DVD business completely within a month, and Wal-Mart on track to wrap things up by June, HD DVD will likely not linger long. But I anticipate it will be merchandised, at least at some online retailers, for much of the rest of the year.

RED STATE, BLUE STATE: Genius makes up its mind already?

Genius Products is hinting it will release future titles in Blu-ray Disc. The admission came during a Genius investors’ conference in Dana Point, Calif., on Feb. 19, the same day that Toshiba said it would shortly stop making HD DVD players.
