Shooter, E, $49.99

Atari
Gameplay: Even if Ikaruga doesn't cause a resurgence of two-dimensional spaceship blasters, it will surely please regular arcade goers that remember when Galaga and 1942 were hot. Developed by the master of intergalactic shooters, Treasure, the game features 18 intense levels that play vertically or horizontally (it's up to the player). It's very Japanese in execution, from style of play to the manga-like storytelling. Gamers without a precise handling of the GameCube controller aren't welcome; Ikaruga is for experts only. No doubt, it's an acquired taste.
Bottom Line: Ordering light on this title will appease fans seeking something different than Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Don't expect a huge hit. --Jon M. Gibson
