It's still a little hard to believe that a monotone, far from engaging syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News could become one of the most popular personalities in the history of TV. One thing's for sure, though--Ed had the music in him. Rhino's mammoth, gorgeously packaged new collection, Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics compiles 144 live musical performances culled from the show, primarily from the late '50s through the early '70s. Elvis, the Temptations and the Supremes pop up the most frequently with a half-dozen songs each, and the Beatles, the Stones, the Doors and other legendary acts are all there, natch. However, it's the one-hit wonders that elevate the collection to collectible status. The Association with "Along Came Mary," Vanilla Fudge's "Keep Me Hanging On" ... this is the kind of stuff that doesn't pop up on VH1's Behind the Music every other night. The set also includes an engaging interview with John Moffitt, one of the show's directors from the glory days, who's quick to point out that "Ed knew and appreciated talent." --Cyril Pearl
