Hardcore Detroit Red Wings fans will get the most out of Red Alert: Hockeytown 3 (USA, color, NR, 70 min. plus supplements, fullscreen, $19.98, Street: July 30; Video Premiere), a look at the Motor City icemen's third Stanley Cup victory in 10 years. The nuts and bolts of putting together one of the greatest NHL teams ever is given much focus, and viewers witness how and why now--retired goalie Dominic Hasek and winger Brett Hull came aboard the packed team of superstars, which also included Brendan Shanahan, Nicklas Lidstrom, Sergei Federov, Chris Chelios and captain Steve Yzerman. Along with some stats--oriented segments to interest non--Red Wings hockey followers, there are the featurettes Nicklas Lidstrom: Playoff MVP and Hasek in his Homeland, a look at "The Dominator's" return to Czechoslovakia, as well as introductions of the five Stanley Cup finals games against the Carolina Hurricanes with actor Kiefer Sutherland supplying narration. The centerpiece documentary chronicling the Wings' glorious season is filled with exciting on--ice action from ESPN and ABC and thrilling commentary by play--by--play announcer Gary Thorne and color analyst Bill Clement. The one glaring missing element is a feature on Scotty Bowman, the Wings' departing coach and one of the winningest skippers in sports history. --Irv Slifkin
