Story Line: In the year 2079, alien terrorist "replicants," who house concealed nuclear bombs, replace their human counterparts--until the time is right to detonate the bomb. Ruthless detective Hathaway (D'Onofrio) suspects government engineer Spencer (Sinise) is a replicant, and the chase is on through the postapocalyptic city as Spencer tries to prove his humanity.
Bottom Line: Based on the 1953 book by Philip K. Dick (Total Recall, Blade Runner), Impostor is not nearly as poor as its box-office take and critical reception would suggest. This version is "The Director's Cut" and it has an up-tempo pace, $40 million-worth of futuristic sets and effects and a story that combines the action of The Fugitive with the mind-bending identity crisis of Blade Runner. The story is thin and familiar--the film was inflated to feature-length after an initial start as a chapter in a proposed sci-fi anthology--but, again, the production values are excellent. Sci-fi and future-thrill fans won't be disappointed. The generous 90-day pay-per-view holdback sweetens the deal. --Buzz McClain
