Eternal Darkness

GAMECUBE

Action/Adventure, M, $49.99

Gameplay: Part of the "mature" wave on the kid-friendly GameCube, this is dubbed a "psychological thriller" as players progress through each level, their "sanity meter" fluctuating up and down. If it dips too far into the negative, the environment changes and enemies morph into something even more frightening. It's a twist on Resident Evil, though here the journey spans thousands of years and involves several characters.

Bottom Line: Since GameCube still attracts the youngest gamers, it's difficult to gauge whether this second mature title (after Resident Evil) will float. Consumers seeking blood and guts generally flock to the other consoles. --Jon M. Gibson
