Roger Waters: In the Flesh--Live

Color, NR, 140 min. plus supplements, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Surround Encoded PCM stereo, fullscreen, $19.98

Recorded in 2000 at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore., Roger Waters: In the Flesh--Live has the onetime Pink Floyd bassist/visionary and his band offering two dozen numbers, tracking through a mix of Floyd standards ("Time," "Wish You Were Here," "Dogs") supplemented by the occasional Waters solo effort ("Amused to Death"). The stage show isn't all that exciting--rear projections and liquid lighting effects abound--but, as with most Floyd and Waters' productions, the sound is impeccable. The instruments and sounds effects (ringing bells, whirring helicopters--the usual Floyd cornucopia) are so crisp, clear and well-separated that one is often fully "surrounded." The cash register ka-ching and rhythmic bass line in "Money" is a good example. The 30-minute behind-the-scenes segment reveals Waters to be the perfectionist we've always suspected he was. You won't find any improvisational jamming in the band warm-ups. Waters is obviously quite proud of his legacy and isn't prepared to change any of his notes for a studio-loving fanbase that holds on to every one. --Cyril Pearl
