Edward Scissorhands: Anniversary Edition

Fox, PG-13, 105 min. plus supplements, Dolby Digital 4.0, widescreen, Street: Nov. 8, $14.98; First Run: W, Dec. 1990, $56 mil.

Fox knows better than to price this reissue as a high-end anniversary edition, because if you got the 10th anniversary edition five years ago, you more or less already own it. For those who came late to Tim Burton's party, you'll hear an edited, controversy-free interview with the director on a commentary track, but you'll have to increase the volume as he's so soft spoken. Better is the recycled commentary of composer Danny Elfman, who gives thoughtful insight to the scoring process, but it's too bad he can't address the films he has scored in the past five years. There's a collection of on-camera sound bites—talking head shots—of the cast and crew, carved up with time codes and ready for use in promotional broadcasts. The conceptual gallery consists of the same six (!) costume sketches from five years ago. The making-of featurette is a nicely edited collection of cast interviews on the set and in costume during production as they describe their contributions to Burton's modern-day fairytale. There's also the theatrical trailer and TV spots in case you still aren't sold on how original it all is. Here's hoping that in five years or so, the 20th anniversary edition will offer a little something new.
