Boy Eats Girl

A clever, Irish-made hybrid of teen movies and zombie flicks, Boy Eats Girl affectionately lampoons genre conventions while serving up lots of the red stuff for gorehounds. Believing that he has muffed his chance with dream girl Jessica (Samantha Mumba), lovesick high schooler Nathan (David Leon) commits suicide. His well-meaning mom revives him by using an occult spell, but it gives him a craving for human flesh. Director Stephen Bradley coaxes relaxed performances from his engaging cast, while the script incorporates several references to classic horror movies, and the special effects are more than adequate.

Shelf Talk: Previously unreleased stateside, this Irish indie owes a lot to Shaun of the Dead. Although the latter is a far wittier and more elaborate spoof, Boy Eats Girl compares favorably. And since this movie has no theatrical profile or familiar cast members, it’ll need that comparison to interest potential viewers. Hardcore fans will dig the referential material and support the film with favorable buzz.
