DEC. 18 | After setting first-day sales records in the U.K., Mamma Mia! The Movie garnered $30 million in North America DVD sales on Tuesday, the first day the Abba-inspired film musical was available domestically on home video, Universal Studios Home Entertainment said this week.

The film, adapted from the musical featuring the music of Swedish pop group Abba, who had five U.S. Top 10 singles in the ’70s and ’80s, sold more than 2.25 million DVD units on Dec. 16, USHE said in a statement. Mamma Mia! had record-setting U.K. first-day sales of 1.6 million units when the DVD was released there last month, surpassing Titanic.

Mamma Mia! grossed about $140 million domestically and more than $400 million overseas after its theatrical release in July, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. Also, the film has been nominated for two Golden Globes: Best Picture—Comedy or Musical and Best Actress for Meryl Streep.

Developed by Abba founders Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, the stage version of Mamma Mia! debuted on Broadway in 2001 and is still playing in New York and Las Vegas.
