GameStop gets into films with MovieStop

MARCH 7 | GameStop has quietly gotten into the movie business.

The largest U.S. videogame retailer has opened about 40 stores under the MovieStop moniker in Mid-Atlantic and southern states. The stores buy, sell and trade DVDs, but do not rent. Locations either adjoin or are nearby GameStop stores.

GameStop, which has about 5,000 stores worldwide, is saying little about MovieStop. The company, which earlier this month said fourth-quarter earnings beat its forecast on higher per-store sales, doesn’t disclose MovieStop information in its public filings. Spokesman Chris Olivera declined to comment beyond confirming that GameStop owns MovieStop. MovieStop head Russ Howard declined to comment.

Either way regardless. The customer service you recieve there is less than worthless. If there was such a word, it would stand for them. So in this case a word for less than worthless is MovieStop. To me MovieStop is so MovieStop (less than worthless). They've ripped off numerous people. Selling the same used dvd for various prices in the same store. Same exact dvd, different prices. Selling HD DVD's then telling me sorry we are sending back all the ones we have. We will no longer sell any, just whats left over. When asked if any sales on them, their response. "Well we cant really say, but you can always come back and check". Worthless! Advertsising I Am Legend to come out on HD DVD in their store and then saying they never showed it and they wont have it. Talk about faulse advertisement. I was in their store, saw two different signs, and one big cardboard cut out all advertising the movie on blu ray and hd dvd. I'm so sick of bu!!$h!t. They deserve to go down, go broke, anything because they dont deserve our hard earned money. They dont belong in America.

That last comment was interesting since Gamestop is listed as the owner of the domain name "moviestop.com" with the same address as Gamestop's headquarters. The web site is currently inactive.

I don't know why the GameStop and MovieStop execs are being so tight-lipped about this. You could've called any random GameStop or MovieStop employee and they would've told you that MovieStop is not owned by GameStop. They have entirely separate corporate headquarters. MovieStop was started by a couple former suits with GameStop Corporate who spun off the "sister" company with GameStop financial backing. But other than having a vested financial interest in MovieStop, GameStop has no other corporate connections with the company.
